What Causes Rosacea?
Rosacea can be triggered by a number of factors, and it’s important for each individual to identify his or her triggers and take steps to avoid them in order to limit flare-ups.
With that being said, rosacea may be caused by emotional stress, heat, sun exposure, intense exercise, extremely cold temperatures, wind, caffeine, alcohol consumption, hot or spicy foods, and menopause.
Rosacea Symptoms
Many individuals with rosacea experience flushing in the central face and redness that waxes and wanes.
Patients may also present with acne-like bumps (that sometimes contain pus), swelling, a burning and/or itching sensation of the eyes, and visible blood vessels that are especially prominent on the nose and cheeks.
In some rare cases, rosacea can lead to skin thickening. When it occurs on the nose, it is called rhinophyma.
Rosacea Treatment Options
After conducting a thorough medical history, assessing your symptoms and concerns, and performing a visual examination, Dr. Yousefi will develop a customized treatment plan to manage your rosacea symptoms. It may include topical creams and ointments, oral medications, and vascular laser treatments.
Intense pulsed light, commonly referred to as IPL, is another in-office treatment option and targets hemoglobin in blood vessels with bursts of broad-spectrum light.
In doing so, IPL is able to diffuse redness, acne-like bumps, inflammation, and visible vessels.
